Screened topsoil is a good product for reseeding lawns, placing under new sod, making raised bed gardens and just about anywhere you want to plant something. Screening the topsoil removes large rocks, twigs, and other debris and the soil comes out relatively fine which makes it super easy to work with. Landscapers like it because it is easier and faster to move into place which reduces their labor costs. Homeowners love it because it saves on their backs when doing their yards etc. One thing most suppliers don't talk about though is this; when you screen the soil you reduce it to such a fine grade that what can happen is that it can compact once it is placed in your yard. One way to reduce that compaction is to introduce organic matter like compost back into the mix. This will also add nutrients that your new plants will need. The best type of screened topsoil may come at a premium price but the benefits are greater. Some topsoil can have as much as 50% organic compost added to the mix. In some cases buying the premium topsoil can reduce or eliminate the need for starter fertilizer and so the costs may equal out in the long run.
